This morning I had a Moroccan bath (in Ethiopia) as part of my birthday spa-treat weekend here in Addis. It was not without bravery that I partook in this service, since the last time I had a Moroccan bath (in a local bathhouse in Morocco) I was roughly scrubbed and slapped around by two very hangry, fasting ladies one late afternoon during the holy month of Ramadan. As the Call to Prayer started to break that long days fast, the acerbic ladies poured a bucket of water over my head, dropped it on the floor, and swiftly took off to eat.  I can’t say I blame them!

Fortunately my uniquely Ethiopian experience was much better. The bath involves being gently sloughed, then scrubbed with a wonderfully local-made product of ground coffee and natural oils. This was followed by lots of time in the eucalyptus-scented, 100-degree steam room.

Having also had a pedicure yesterday, my feet now look and feel super fabulous because they haven’t been this smooth since the late 70’s. I am now going into my ripe new age with not one dead, loose or old skin cell, and with happy feet to take me where I need to go next.
